JACKSONIAN DEMOCRACY

SPOILS PATRONAGE SYSTEM

  • A practice where a political party gives government jobs to its voters
  • It's an incentive to keep the people working for the party.

NULLIFICATION CRISIS IN SOUTH CAROLINA

  • The government raised a tax that basically only benefited the north
  • The south rebelled and the government made a small lowering of taxes
  • But as far as South Carolina was concerned there was no tariff

TARIFF OF 1828 A.K.A TARIFF OF ABOMINATION

  • Many people from South Carolina were outraged by a tariff passed in 1828
  • This tariff raised taxes on imports
  • It was so controversial, it became well known as the Tariff of Abominations

JOHN C. CALHOUN

  • Calhoun was a leading American politician and political theorist
  • He mainly did this during the first half of the 19th century
  • He served terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate
  • As well as being the 7th president of the United States

WORCESTER V. GEORGIA

  • This was a case in which the U.S. Supreme Court vacated the conviction of Worcester
  • In Georgia the criminal statute that prohibited non-Native Americans from being present on Native Americans land
  • In order for non-Native Americans to be present on Native Americans land they needed a license
  • This case declared that unconstitutional

INDIAN REMOVAL ACT

  • This was a law passed while Andrew Jackson was president on May 28, 1830
  • This allowed him to negotiate with the Native Americans
  • Non-Native people of the south strongly supported this

TRAIL OF TEARS

  • This was a terrible ethnic cleansing and forced relocation of Native Americans
  • Many, many Native Americans died along this trail, hence the name
  • Copious members of Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw were evacuated

ELECTION OF 1840- "TIPPECANOE AND TYLER TOO"

  • This was the 14th quadrennial presidential election held from October 30th- December 2, 1840
  • "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too" was the war hero's William Harrison's slogan

"HIS ACCIDENCY"

  • "His Accidency" was John Tyler's nickname who was also the 10th president

IRISH AND GERMAN IMMIGRANTS

  • More than one half of the Irish population emigrated to the United States
  • So did an equal number of Germans
  • Mainly because of civil unrest, severe unemployment, or almost inconceivable hardships at home

IRISH POTATO FAMINE

  • The potato famine was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration between 1845-1852

NATIVISM

  • The political position of demanding a favored stature for certain established inhabitants

SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

  • This was a Protestant revival movement during the early 19th century
  • Memberships among the Baptist and Methodist congregations rose significantly

CHARLES FINNEY

  • Finney was an American Presbyterian minister and leader in the 2nd Great Awakening
  • He's been called the Father of Modern Revivalism

BRIGHAM YOUNG

  • Young was an American leader in the Latter Day Saint movement

ELIZABETH CADY STANTON

  • She was the 8th of 11 children an was born in Johnstown, New York
  • Stanton is believed to be the driving force behind the 1848 Convention

SENECA FALLS CONVENTION

  • This was advertised as a "Women's Rights Convention"
  • At this Convention the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of women were discussed

GRADUALISM

  • The belief in or policy of change by gradual, slow stages

ABOLITIONISM

  • A movement to end slavery

DOUGLASS' NORTH STAR

  • 19th century anti-slavery newspaper published in the U.S. By abolitionist Frederick Douglass

REACTIONS TO THE ABOLITIONIST MOVEMENT IN THE NORTH AND SOUTH

  • The south as expected fiercely opposed the abolitionists movement
  • Whereas most people in the north supported this movement
