BROWN VS BOARD OF EDUCATION

MAY 17, 1954

This was acknowledged as the greatest Supreme Court decisions of the 20th century.
It was made so that some schools were not allowed to have racial segregation of children in public schools.

GREENSBORO SIT-IN

FEB. 1, 1960

The greensboro sit-ins were a means to desegregate the Woolworth department store chains.
To do this, many people came and sat in stores until closing time.

SNCC FOUNDED

APR. 1, 1960

The student non-violent coordination committee (sncc), was formed to allow young blacks to have a stronger voice in the civil rights movement.

PEACE CORP ESTABLISHED

MAR. 1, 1961

Peace corps is a volunteer program run by the u.s government.
Peace corps aims to; provide technical assistance, help people understand Am. Culture and other cultures too as well.

FREEDOM RIDERS

MAY 4, 1961

The freedom riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into segregated southern U.s states.
They left Washington D.C and rode to New Orleans.

CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH ON WASHINGTON

JUL. 2, 1964

More than 200,000 people attended this event in Washington D.C.
The event was to give hope for African Americans who faced political and social problems across the country.
Martin Luther King Jr. Also delivered his speech, ""I Have A dream"".

JFK KILLED

NOV. 22, 1963

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper while traveling with his wife, Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connaly, and his wife Nellie. A ten-month investigation found out that Lee Harvey Oswald was the assassinator.

FREEDOM SUMMER

JUNE 1964

Freedom Summer was a campaign to register as many African-American voters as possible.

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964

JUL. 2, 1964

A civil rights legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or nation origin.

MALCOLM X ASSASSINATION

FEB. 21, 1965

Malcolm little was an American Muslim and human rights activist. Has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. He was assassinated by three members of the Nation of Islam.

VOTING RIGHTS ACT PASSED

AUG. 6, 1965

A federal legislation that prohibits racial discrimination in voting.

JAMES MEREDITH

1966

An American civil rights activist planned a 220 mile march against fear from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi.

BLACK PANTHERS

OCT. 1966

The black panthers were a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization. They instituted a variety of community social programs.

MLK KILLED

APR. 4, 1968

The civil rights leader was killed by James Earl Ray. He was arrested on June 8, 1968.

ROBERT KENNEDY KILLED

JUN. 5, 1968

Brother of Jfk killed while shaking the hand of 17 year old Juan Romero. He was shot by Sirhan Sirhan.

BLOODY SUNDAY

JAN. 30, 1972

British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians during a protest march against internment. 14 were killed, the march was organized by the Northern Ireland civil rights association.
