Immigration is THE topic of contention in the approaching presidential election. An awful lot of Americans (all whose ancestors came here as immigrants) are now down on immigration, both legal and illegal. In fact polls show Americans are less favorable toward immigration than Europeans, who have more of an anti-immigration reputation. Personally I am baffled by the fear of immigrants, since they are the source of so much of our economic and cultural strength. And in a world headed toward population decline, immigrants will be a highly desirable counter-force. We should definitely make immigration easier, legal, and with more subtle options (worker, child student.)
The main causes of World War I, which began in central Europe in late July 1914, included many factors, such as the conflicts and hostility between the great European powers of the four decades leading up to the war. Militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism played major roles in the conflict as well. The immediate origins of the war, however, lay in the decisions taken by statesmen and generals during the July Crisis of 1914 caused by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie by Gavrilo Princip, an irredentist Serb and member of the Serbian nationalist organization, the Black Hand.
World War 1 was an extremely bloody war, with huge losses of life and little ground lost or won. Fought mostly by soldiers in trenches, World War 1 saw an estimated 10 million military deaths. While many hoped that World War 1 would be "the war to end all wars," in actuality, the concluding peace treaty set the stage for World War 2.
World War I will be remembered as one of the bloodiest wars in human history. Millions of soldiers died on both sides, and whole generations of young men were wiped out. Armies were bogged down in impenetrable trenches, resulting in thousands dying in futile assaults against fortified enemies. The war also introduced new and terrible weapons, such as the machine gun, which made the war even more horrific and bloody. There are many terrible battles, but this is a list of the worst.
The Roaring Twenties is a term sometimes used to refer to the 1920s in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, characterizing the decade's distinctive cultural edge in New York City, Chicago, Paris, Berlin, London, and many other major cities during a period of sustainedxc economic prosperity.
The nineteen twenties were a time of economic progress for most Americans. During the administrations of President Warren Harding and President Calvin Coolidge, many companies grew larger, creating new jobs. Wages for most Americans increased. Many people began to have enough money to buy new kinds of products.
The Dirty Thirties, also referred to as, The Dust Bowl of the 1930 s, was a dark period in United States' history. It was a period where there was relentless dust storms which almost brought the agricultural sector of America and Canada to 'its knees.' The dust storms were caused by a long period of drought and years of bad farming techniques that caused such things as soil erosion.
The Dust Bowl, also known as the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the US and Canadian prairies during the 1930s
Second World War, was a global war. It is generally considered to have lasted from 1939 to 1945, although some conflicts in Asia that are commonly viewed as becoming part of the world war had begun earlier than 1939.
The causes of World War Two can be divided into long term causes and short term causes. There can be little doubt that one of the long term causes of the war was the anger felt in Weimar Germany that was caused by the Treaty of Versailles.
Another long term cause was the obvious inability of the League of Nations to deal with major international issues. In the 1930’s these would have been in Manchuria and Abyssinia. In both conflicts the League showed that it was unable to control those powers that worked outside of accepted international law.
Considered as one of the most conservative decades in recent memory the 1950s were a time when technology underwent a dramatic evolution.
It was less than a decade after the second World War and science was in its element; technology that had only been postulated and pondered was suddenly becoming reality.
In this decade, two men solved the integrated circuit puzzle and now corporate giants like Intel, IBM and Toshiba are galloping head first towards 0.01nm technology.
