  • Was very influential toward education and the countries development

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Defeat of the Danes
  • Had a powerful army
  • Unified England
  • Strengthened the government
  • Pushed for better education and helped make learning important
  • Only English Monarch to get the title "the Great"

William the Conqueror

WILLIAM

  • First Norman king of England
  • Reigned from 1066 to 1087
  • Long term: changed the language in England

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Became duke of Normandy at age 7
  • Won the battle of Hastings
  • Was crowned king of England
  • Punished the rebels from North of England called "The Harrying of the North"
  • Introduced English to England

Pope Gregory VII

LIFE

  • Born 1020, died 1085
  • Pope of Rome, lived in the Vatican
  • Changed traditional election practices forever some of his reforms are still practiced in the Catholic Churches today

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Created a decree that outlaws prelates to get their churches from lay rulers
  • Didn't allow clergy men to marry or have concubines

Pope Innocent iii

LIFE

  • Born 1161, died 1216
  • Pope of Rome
  • Changed the papacy forever by making it stronger

  • Started the 4th crusade and the Albigensian Crusade
  • Build the papacy into a more powerful awesome institution than ever before
  • Wrote 2 theology books
  • Fourth Lateran Counsel
