Done by hand drawing every frame one by one and then taking a picture of them. some animations took a very long time to make like the shirt film The Sinking of the Lusitania which was made up of over 2000 individual frames.
Created by John Barnes Linnett it was basically the worlds first flip book. A flip book is a bunch of paper layered on top of each other with every single page having a frame on it. when the pages are flipped through quickly the image seems to move.
When animated films just started coming out some people would compare it to magic. This was because people had never really seen anything like it before.
