Animation Before Computers

  • Done by hand drawing every frame one by one and then taking a picture of them. some animations took a very long time to make like the shirt film The Sinking of the Lusitania which was made up of over 2000 individual frames.

The Kineograph

  • Created by John Barnes Linnett it was basically the worlds first flip book. A flip book is a bunch of paper layered on top of each other with every single page having a frame on it. when the pages are flipped through quickly the image seems to move.

The Zotrobe

  • Created by Eadweard Muybridge the Zotrobe was a disk with images all around it. when spun it would create the illusion of movement

The magic of Animation

  • When animated films just started coming out some people would compare it to magic. This was because people had never really seen anything like it before.

The Sinking of the Lusitania

  • A short film created by Winsor McCay in 1918 as propaganda for the Great war. This is a very important film because it is known to be one of the first animated documentary and is often called the longest animation of its time.
