WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO STUDY OUR PAST?

EARLY MAN

  • The history of architecture began when we moved out of caves
  • Developing tools allowed man to make shelter
  • Stones, sticks, mud, hides, and other materials were used

PREHISTORIC ARCHITECTURE

  • Stonehenge is more than 5,000 years old
  • The largest stone weighs 40 tons
  • Some people think it may be a giant astronomical calendar
  • Many other large prehistoric monuments exsist

ANCIENT EGYPT

  • 3,050-900 BC
  • Rulers constructed pyramids, temples, and shrines
  • Huge limestone blocks were quarried and drug many miles
  • Pyramids were covered in fine white limestone

CLASSICAL

  • Greek & Roman 850 BC - 476 AD
  • Public buildings and temples were constructed according to precise rules
  • Greeks used limestone and marble
  • Romans developed concrete
