IN THE UNITED STATES THE FIRT MENTION OF BASEBALL WAS IN 1792

NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKERS WERE THE FIRST TO PLAY UNDER THE MORE MODERN RULES

THE FIRST GAME UNDER THE NEWLY FORMED KNICKERBOCKER RULES WAS

BETWEEN THE NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKERS AND THE NEW YORK NINE

IN 1857, SIXTEEN NEW YORK AREA CLUBS, INCLUDING THE KNICKERBOCKERS

FORMED THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BASE BALL PLAYERS (NABBP)

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL BASE BALL PLAYERS, OPERATED FROM

1871 THROUGH 1875, AND IS CONSIDERE TO HAVE BEEN THE FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE.

A "GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT" WAS STRUCK BETWEEN THE CLUBS WHICH BARRED NON-

WHITE players from professional baseball, which lasted until 1947.

The first league, the National Colored Base Ball League, was organized

STRICTLY AS A MINOR LEAGUE BUT FAILED IN 1887after only two weeks

WITH THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL BASE BALL PLAYERS, CLUBS NOW

HAD the ability to enforce player contracts, PREVENTING TEAM JUMPING

MOSES FLEETWOOD WALKER AND HIS BROTHER WELDAY WALKER WERE ABRUPTLY

DROPPED FROM MAJOR AND MINOR-LEAGUE ROSTERS IN THE 1880S

OUT OF ANGER TOWARDS THE OTHER TEAMS BAN JOHNSON BROKE OF AND

FORMED HIS OWN LEAGUE OF THE BEST PLAYERS, BECOMING THE AMERICAN LEAGUE

On September 5, 1901 Patrick T. Powers, president of the Eastern League,

FORMED THE second National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues

IN 1947 THE GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT WAS LIFTED AND JACKIE ROBINSON

WAS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN SINCE THE COLOR BAN TO PLAY IN THE MAJORS

FROM THE 1950'S TO THE 1960'S SOME TEAMS STARTED TO LEAVE THE EAST AND

GO TO THE WESTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY

In 1973 the American League, made a move to increase scoring even

further by initiating the designated hitter rule
