HISTORY OF MAKEUP

ALI ORME 8B

Cosmetics started in 10,000 BCE in Egypt. Men and women used oils to make their skin soft. Later on women started using burnt almonds and ash to darken their eyes. They believed that wearing makeup was a way to honor God.

Around 3000 BCE makeup came to China and Japan. People in the upper class stained their nails but it was forbidden for lower class people. Around 1500 BCE people would lighten their face with rice powder. They used crushed berries to color their cheeks.

In Rome about 100 AD people put flour and butter on their pimples and sheep fat on their fingernails for color. Mud baths were popular. Women whitened their faces with creams even though sometimes they were poisonous.

During the Renaissance Period blonde hair became more popular. Lightening the face was still very popular. Perfumes were introduced.

In the 18th century wearing red rouge and lipstick became popular as it was supposed to resemble a fun-loving spirit. Powdered wigs were also in.

By the 1800's company stopped using poisonous ingredients in their products. White complexions along with heavy use of makeup was not poplar. But women liked to use blush because it was a sign of good health.
