Egyptian Civilization
1-In ancient Egypt most officers were native to area.
2-"police" were to guard strategic places in times of need or accompany expeditions

3- a mining party more than nine thousand men strong under Ramses IV was accompanied by a unit of fifty policemen, one of the first of its kind.
4- Egypt had a security issue and authorities ordered "police " from the region to assemble in order to protect the Theban necropolis.
5-term Medjay is no longer found in Egyptian written records

6-Police were often in small groups or searching parties
7-police were often in charge of guarding a particular thing set by a king or president of some sort.
8-They were called medjays.
9-the Medjay were an elite paramilitary police force
10-medjays interest like capital cities, royal cemeteries, and the borders of Egypt

Greek civ
1-Foreign slaves were often employed to police the cities of ancient Greece.
2-greeks relied on citizens to reportcrimes.
3-reporting a crime, if an arrest was made, an informant would receive half of the fine charged

4-Police is a derivative of the Greek word “Politeria.”
5- Criminals were tried before a jury of 200 or more picked at random.
6- they were punished by fines, their right to vote taken away, exile, or death.
7- Imprisonment was not typically used as a punishment.

10- punishment of fines were usually paid back within a time period or a harsher punishment was permitted.

Roman civilization
1- their were different grades or ranks of officers
2- soldiers often employed as police
3- seven districts and 14 groups of police represented the very first "precincts."

4-Roman law couldn't defend everyone outside of the cities reach.
5- many "civil" type trials were often handled with police officers
6- Romans incorporated commercial laws that police had to regulate

7- Roman soldiers were more of a special task force that more or less took care of citizens.
8- "police" would patrol around certain areas.
9- began stations of guarding certain places
10- police were often strategically placed at "high crime" areas.

900AD - 1066AD
1-British develop "kin policing"
2- law enforcement was in the peoples hands instead of selected officers.
3- community model was founded called the frankpledge in 1066.
4-constables and Sheriffs developed from "kin policing"

5- tythings (a group of ten) were sworn to bring criminals to a court of some sort.
6- each person pledged to help every other citizen.
7- tythings were not paid for their duty.
8- criminals were to be held by the people in a tything.
9- of someone didn't do their job the group would get fined heavily.
10- tythings of "police" were grouped into100

1066 - 1326 AD
1- night watch system develeps.
2- one man from each parish was selected as a constable.
3- constable gets to choose citizens to help guard.
4- in 1326 shire reeve was replaced by the Justice Of The Peace.
5- citizens were not paid to help the constables.

6-local constables and shire reeve became assistances to justice of peace.
7- they served warrants
8- could call upon all males in town and make them help if needed.
9- constables and shire reeves supervised the night watch
10- helped with pending processing for courts.

1300-1700 AD Policing
1- American law originates form English law and still is under rule.
2- Many times justice was unfair.
3- police didn't use power unless it affected their goal.
4- family would often seek justice themselves instead of police.

5- British police was a military forced guarding colonies.
6- Hangings were often as Capitol punishment.
7- Restitution was set in places for theft and such.
8- first established law enforcement in Boston
9- townspeople formed "watches".
10- police were often in groups.

1700 - 1829 AD
1- citizens were police
2- law enforcement organization was locally.
3- London still used the military for their policing.
4- in 1748, henry fielding founded the bow street runners.
5- group of law enforcement that made criminal arrests
6- group also recovered stolen items.

7- proven to be more effective than any type of law enforcement to this day.
8- sir Robert peele made a publicly funded type of police.
9- was in the London metropolitan police act.
10- was introduced because of the crowded cities and crime increase.

1829 AD TO PRESENT
1- in 1847 TEXAS Rangers were formed.
2- 1935 Texas rangers were moved under the dps.
3- on April 14th, 1865 Lincoln made the secret service.
4- secret service is for counterfeit money and protecting the president.
5- 1910 first police woman is given power of arrest.

6- FBI was created in 1924.
7- spoils system was used but caused corruption for awhile.
8- citizens wanted to end corruption so they demanded reforms of police policies.
9- began police review boards.
10- citizens could now get into police affairs and complain and such with actual discipline involved.
