SOFTBALL

  • Softball developed as a younger version of baseball .
  • Softball was started by elements of other sports.
  • A boxing glove and a football game were key parts in the very first game of softbal
  • Softball was first introduced on thanksgiving day in 1887 at a Harvard Yale football game .
  • A mam from Yale football game threw a boxing glove at the Harvard's grads after the game.

SOFTBALL

  • Softball was invented inside the Farragut Boat Club on a winter day in November 1887
  • This was in Chicago , A bunch of Yale and Harvard alumni anxiously awaited the results of the Harvard Yale football game
  • This all gave George Hancock , a reporter for the Chicago Board of trade , an idea .
  • He suggested a game of indoor baseball .
  • Naturally Hancock's friends thought he was talking about playing a game outdoors not indoors .

  • Hancock considered to be the inventor of softball.
  • He tied the boxing glove so that it resembled a ball .
  • He chalked out a diamond on the floor , which gave it small dimensions of a field .
  • He also broke off a broom handle to serve Asa bat . A new of baseball was born softball
  • Hancock was fascinated and in the following weeks a large ball & small ball for the sports .

  • Rules and a league were established by the Boat Club in 1889.
  • The first league began in 1897 in Toronto .
  • Softball is often referred to baseball for girls .
  • With a larger ball and a smaller diamond .
  • This generalization holds only some truth .

  • A direct descendant considered a female sport .
  • But it was created by , and is still common among men .
  • This all happened when the group of men joined together in Chicago.
  • Hancock the reporter for Chicago yelled let's play ball and that's what they did .
  • Hancock used the glove strings to knot the glove together into a ball .

  • Softball , especially fast pitch is considered mostly a women's game I'm the 21st century .
  • But it didn't begin that way it began as a offshoot of baseball for men that could be played indoors in the winter.
  • The game proved it could stand on its own , and moved outdoors .
  • A couple years later it was called " indoor - outdoor " .
  • The Farragut club also wrote the first rules of the game .

  • By the 1930's similar sports with different rules and names were being played across the country .
  • And into Canada .
  • Softball standardized in 1933 as the Amateur softball association was formed .
  • The first women's team in 1895 at Chicago's West Division High School .

  • The high school did not obtain a coach for competitive day until 1899.
  • International women's professional softball league was formed in 1976.
  • The league folded in 1980.
  • But the game hasn't stopped growing .
  • After world War 2 Canadian soldiers introduced softball to the Netherlands .
