IS THE DISEASE VIRAL OR BACTERIAL?
HIV is viral. It is primarily spread by unprotected sex with a person who is already affected.
Symptoms of HIV are flu like symptoms, fever, headache, tiredness, and enlarged lymph glands in the neck.
When the disease attacks, it shuts down the T-cells which help keep your immune system healthy.
Where in the world is the disease most commonly found?
HIV is most commonly found in South Africa.
What age group is most susceptible to the disease or who is more likely to get it?
The age group most susceptible is 13-24 years old.
TREATMENT?
- How do doctors help people get better when they get the disease?
- Why do they do this?
A drug called AZT is the first approved treatment. The doctors do this treatment because without it, HIV can make your immune system weak.
How would someone go about preventing the disease or keep from getting it?
Practice abstinence or have protected sex. Don't inject drugs and share equipment.
