Acute infection: virus being produced, develope flu-like symptoms
Clinical latency: HIV reproduces at low levels, symptoms not present
AIDS: fall below 200 cells, have aids.

SYMPTOMS
Fever, body rash, sore throat, swollen glands
headache, upset stomach, joint aches/pains
Females: fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, dry cough
Males: headache, swollen glands, diarrhea, weight loss

Older people are receiving more treatment
26% of infection are from ages 13-24
47% = African American/black

How is it diagnosed?
test blood for antibodies to the virus
test saliva for antibodies to the virus
takes 12 weeks to develop the antbodies

PREVENTION
Medications to prevent HIV called ART(antiretroviral therapy)
They do not treat the virus
ART only slows down the HIV process

DIFFERENCE FROM AIDS?
HIV cannot kill you
