LIFE IN THE JUNGLE
Many Hmong in the forest died of starvation and illnesses

THE WAR ENDS
In 9175, U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam and Laos.
Communist soldiers burned down villages of the Hmong who had fought on the side of the United States

THE KILLING CONTINUES
The communist soldiers hunted down the Hmong member of the secrecy army and dropped bombs on their villages
Soldiers set fire to the jungle with napalm, many thousands of Hmong soldiers, civilians, including children died
Some of the Hmong surrendered to the communists and many Hmong would live as slaves workers

Many Hmong went across the Mekong River to get to Thailand which they knew that they would be safe there
Few Hmong people had boats, but some tried to swim past the rushing waters
Other Hmong people had rafts made out of bamboo poles and banana leaves. It took about three hours to cross or even more...

THE REFUGEE CAMPS
From 1975 to 1990, hundreds of Hmong fled Laos and went to Thailand into the refugee camps
The largest camp in Thailand was named Ban Vinai (Bahn ve-NYE)
Over 45,000 Hmong lived in Ban Vinai but half of the population was children

LIVING CONDIRIONS
Most if the refugee camps lived in rows of bamboo barracks, the barracks had dirt floors and straw roofs. Only ten families could live in one barrack
Some of the families had little space for a mini grader which they could have grew food for themselves

FAMILY IS IMPORTANT
In the camps the Hmong tried to follow their own customs and traditions
Family is very important because when they lived as before, in groups or clans

INSPIRE A GROUP
The main Hmong clan in from Laos and Thailand was green Hmong and the armband hmong
The main clans were the Vietnam included the white Hmong, blue Hmong, black Hmong and flower hmong
Sometimes the Hmong were hand sewed certain types of clothing to show what clan they were in

NO WRITTEN LANGUAGE
Many Hmong before wanted to share their experiences about the war but they figured that they never had a written language
Legends say that a very long time ago in China the Hmong had a written language but sadly the language was lost over time
Some western missionaries tried to create a Hmong alphabet by stitching alphabet symbols on their clothing

The Hmong used story cloths to record the history by hand sewing
Since they were so experienced with sewing they sewed story cloths of their history
