MAN IN A STATE OF NATURE

  • Hobbes- men are brutish and destined for war
  • Locke- men are inherently peaceful
  • Rosseau- men are good but society corrupts them

WHAT IS A/THE CONTRACT

  • Hobbes believed in no contract
  • Locke- government should protect people in exchange for the people's willingness to be governed
  • Rosseau- the individual must submit to the will of the majority

IDEAL FORM OF GOVERNMENT

  • Hobbes- totalitarian government
  • Locke- indirect democracy
  • Rosseau- a direct democracy where the majority rules
