Etiology

  • Malignant disorder, painless progressive enlargement of lymphoid tissues.
  • Males more common than females
  • Caucasian more common than African Americans
  • Peaks in early life (15-35) and then later in life (50-70)
  • Occurs more often in people with weakened immune systems.

  • Reed-Sternberg cells
  • Found in cervical, inguinal, and axillary regions

Clinical manifestations

  • Anorexia
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Malaise

  • Alcohol
  • Pruritis
  • Bone pain
  • Palpable masses

Diagnostic tests

  • Physical exam
  • X-Ray, MRI, PET, CT
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Blood studies

Medical management

  • Depends on staging
  • Chemotherapy and radiation
  • Stem cell transplant
  • Tons of meds

Nursing interventions

  • Skin integrity (radiation)
  • Soothing baths
  • Changing linens
  • Encourage questions and problem solving
  • Nutrition

Prognosis

  • One of the most curable cancers
  • Have regular follow up visits with your HCP
