PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LEARNING ABOUT H.O.E

WITH: JACKIE- H.O.E EXPERT

WHAT IS H.O.E?

  • H.O.E stands for hands on equations.
  • H.O.E is algebra.
  • H.O.E is getting you ready for algebra!
  • Did you know that this is taught in middle school?

WHAT ARE THE TOOLS OF H.O.E?

  • A scale
  • Blue pawns
  • Red cubes
  • Equations
  • And your mind!

WHAT IS A SCALE?

  • A scale is a measuring tool.
  • You use it to compare 2 numbers.

WHAT IS A BLUE PAWN?

  • A blue pawn is an item
  • That represents an unknown amount
  • Of objects.

WHAT IS A RED CUBE?

  • A red cube represents
  • The amount of an object
  • That we know.

WHAT DO THESE ITEMS LOOK LIKE?

  • Blue pawn- x
  • Red cube- 1 (number needed)

LETS SOLVE THIS EQUATION!

HOW DO WE DO THIS?

  • Look at our data.
  • We have 2 blue pawns.
  • And a 10 red cube.
  • We need to make the 2 blue pawns
  • Equal the same amount as the red cube.

LET'S TRY IT!

  • What do we know about these numbers?
  • How are they related?
  • I know that _+_=10

Untitled Slide

  • I know that 5+5=10!
  • That means that our blue pawn (x) is equal
  • To 5!

LET'S CHECK OUR WORK!

  • Is 5+5 equal to ten?
  • Is our scale leveled?
  • Is my answer reasonable?

CORRECT!

NOW YOU KNOW THE BASICS OF H.O.E!
