Holistic Management is a farm planning system
that helps farmers, ranchers better manage
agricultural resources in order to reap
sustainable environment
The idea of holistic management was developed in the 60’s by Allan Savory, a wildlife biologist. Desertification in the context of the larger environmental movement, he concluded that the spread of deserts, the loss of wildlife, and the resulting human impoverishment were related to the reduction of the natural herds of large grazing animals and, even more, the changed behavior of the few remaining herds.
A photo taken in Chihuahua, Mexico (2008). Bare ground, woody brush, too few animals overgrazing. This is a man-made desert. Has desertified over hundreds of years, but the desertification can be reversed fairly quickly.
This is a photo of a site using Holistic Management with double the "conventionally recommended stocking rate" (in other words, twice the number of animals grazing than the land can supposedly handle.)
With out Holistic Management we would have a lot of man made deserts. Holistic management play a unique role in the sustainability on this planet.
