SOLUTE

THE MINOR COMPONENT IN A SOLUTION THAT DISSOLVES.

SOLVENT

THE LIQUID IN WHICH A SOLUTE IS DISSOLVED TO FORM A SOLUTION.

UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

A SUBSTANCE THAT DISSOLVES MOST CHEMICALS

SATURATED

Holding as much water or moisture as can be absorbed

UNSATURATED

not holding all of a solute which can be held in solution by the solvent.

SUPER SATURATED

POLAR

A type of covalent bond between two atoms in which electrons are shared unequally.

NON POLAR

A molecule that shares electrons equally.

CRYSTAL LATTICE

The symmetrical three-dimensional arrangement of atoms inside a crystal.

ADHESION

The force of attraction that causes two different substances to join

COHESION

THE STICKING TOGETHER OF PARTICLES OF THE SAME SUBSTANCE.

ION

An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.

IONIC BOND

A chemical bond between two ions with opposite charges.

COVALENT BOND

a chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons between atoms in a molecule.

ELECTROLYTE

A LIQUID OR GEL THAT CONTAINS IONS AND CAN BE DECOMPOSED

ACID

HAS A SOUR TASTE, AND TURNS LITMUS PAPER RED.

BASE

SUBSTANCE THAT CAN ACCEPT HYDRONIUM IONS

HYDROGEN ION

a positively charged atom of hydrogen

HYDROXIDE ION

having one oxygen and one hydrogen atom.

DISTILLED

the process of purifying a liquid by successive evaporation and condensation

BRACKISH

SLIGHTLY SALTY, AS PRESENT IN ESTUARIES.

SALINITY

SALT: THE TASTE EXPERIENCE WHEN COMMON SALT IS TAKEN INTO THE MOUTH.

SOLUTION

A MIXTURE OF 2 OR MORE SUBSTANCES

MIXTURE

TWO OR MORE SUBSTANCES WHICH HAVE BEEN COMBINED.

COMPOUND

A THING THAT IS COMPOSED OF TWO OR MORE SEPARATE ELEMENTS

HOMOGENEOUS

OF THE SAME OR SIMILAR NATURE OR KIND

HETEROGENEOUS

DIVERSE IN CHARACTER OR CONTENT

WATERSHED

An area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas.

WATER QUALITY

THE PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WATER
