What is Homelessness
Homeless is a person who lack a adequate night time residence.
POVERTY AND HOMELESSNESA
- Poverty: not enough money to pay for shelter, food, clothing, utilities, healthcare, etc.
- About 12.5% of the US population is living in poverty (37,000,000)
- Poverty increases due to (increases in unemployment, decreasing in wages, decreasing in public assistance)
2 CATEGORIES OF HOMELESSNESS
-Episodic Homelessness
-Chronically Homelessness
EPISODIC HOMELESSNESS
- Temporary homelessness
- Lack of jobs or domestic violence
- Natural disasters
CHRONICALLY HOMELESSNESS
- Homelessness is a way of life
- Lack of financial resources
- Mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction, or persistent health problem
HISTORY OF THE HOMELESSNESS IN THE US
- Preindustrial phase
- Early industrization
- Initial colonization
- Mature industrialization
- Deindustrialization
PHASE 1: preindustrial phase
-Shortage of shelters
-Government took a lot of land to start building factories with huge machineries
PHASE 2: Early Industrialization
-It was late 18th - early 19th century
-A lot of people came to the cities to work in factories.
-A lot were unemployed.
PHASE 3: Initial colonization
-cheap labor, all money was going for exporting goods for machineries
-poorly paid, didn't have work often
PHASE 4: Mature Industrialization
-Was on the 1870s
-The Great Depression (created 2 tier economy) happened in the 1929-1930
-2 tier economy, in which 1 group receives lower wages and benefits than the other.
PHASE 5: Deindustrialization
-Was on the 1980s
-Changes in the economic system
-More affordable housing, but Low-wage jobs

More than 45% of people who are homeless have gone one or more day without eating.
Domestic violence is a leading cause in homelessness for women
32%of homeless people have attempted suicide at some point in their lives
