HOMESTEAD ACT 1862

What it is.

• The homestead act provided land for American citizens
• You could apply for 1 quarter of public land
• Each acre would cost you 1.25 or less dollars
• A new opportunity for settlers
• In order to apply you needed certain requirements

REQUIREMENTS

• A legal citizen of the u.s
• Being a the head of a family
• Be 21 years of age at the time of arrival
• Never have borne arms against the u.s

IF THE HEAD OF FAMILY DIED

• The land would be passed on to his widow
• But need to have been together for 5 yrs
• 2 witness would be used to confirm this
• Or could be passed to a son of 21 years of age
• A payment of 10 dollars
