Homesteaders were people who went to the west in search of free and cheap land. The opportunity of free land helped them all start new lives.
The homesteaders went to the west because an act called "The Homestead Act". They farmed and lived a regular life for the people of the late 1800's.
The homesteaders settled on the plains in the west.
The homesteaders started going west in 1862 when the homestead act was passed. The act meant that someone could have land for free or very cheap if they were there for an amount of time.
The homesteaders faced many challenges like building a house, staying healthy, extreme weather, lack of fuel, Indian attacks, isolation, keeping clean, lack of water, and pests.
The homesteaders connected to the idea of the manifest destiny because they believed it was their right to own the land.
The homesteaders were important because they started a good amount of civilization in the west. They shaped the west just by farming and building houses.
The homesteaders farmed and contributed to their family with some food and to other settlers. Their legacy were their houses, farms, and ideas.
