Homework is not a punishment, as kids may think. Homework is beneficial.

In the article Purposes of Homework it says, that long assignments help demonstrate independent study skills including your ability to use resources out of the classroom, and how you manage your time.

Schools are cutting down the amount of homework.

In the article Rethinking Homework by Brenda Iasevoli, students in the Pleasanton School District has a new homework policy and it works. Fourth grader Noah Lee goes home and starts his homework right away. Then he does other after school activities. He even has time for free time.

The website teach-no logo.com says, "Homework can cause conflict between children and parents and when the parent wants the child to do their homework but meets resistance from the student to do an overwhelming task."

Your parents can teach you their way.

CONS OF HOMEWORK

HOMEWORK SHOULD BE BANNED FROM SCHOOLS.

The time spent on homework is above average, takes way too long, and results in not enough sleep because teachers assign too much homework for students.

According to the same article, the amount of time American students spend on homework each week is extremely high! In 1981, 9-year-olds to 11-year-olds spent an average of 2 hours and 49 minutes on homework each week. The amount of time spent on homework was up 51% since 1981. By 1997, kids that age were doing more than 3 1/2 hours of homework a week. Kids 6 to 8 years old had an even higher increase, from 44 minutes a week to more than two hours! This isn't good because when students don't get enough sleep, it may affect mood, attention, and memory.

According to a video called Purposes of Homework, it was pointed out that schools should have homework because if you spend a little time practicing or just doing it everyday, you will see improvement in your academics in the future.

According to the website The Myth About Homework, Harris Cooper is a homework expert at Duke University and says that research shows that in the elementary grades, homework has a little effect on achievement. He believes that assignments should be shortened. "'When kids get tired, they turn off,'" he says. "'My 12-year-old daughter and I had been drilling social-studies key words for more than an hour. It was 11 p.m. Our entire evening had, as usual, consisted of homework and conversations (also know as "nagging") about homework. She was tired and fed up. I was tired and fed up. The words wouldn't stick. They meant nothing to her. They didn't mean much to me either.'"

In the same article, Copper and LaConte argue that there is a body of research that shows homework to be quite beneficial if approached as part of a focused strategy for increasing understanding. Homework that is just assigned as busy work and which has no clear benefit is indeed pointless and will have no impact on student achievement.
