PRESENTATION OUTLINE

REPUBLIC

  • Giving the power of the country mainly to the citizens.
  • Sig-Citizens get to vote and choose a leader.
  • Example-The United states has a federal republic, giving citizens a voice.
  • Also, There are two different types of republic systems, federal and unitary.

MONARCHY

  • A single ruler who has all the power from heredity.
  • Sig- Very few countries today have a monarchy.
  • Example- Saudi Arabia, England

THEOCRACY

  • A type of government where the ruler runs in the name of a god/gods.
  • Sig-Iran is the only country that has a theocracy.
  • Example:Iran

DICTATORSHIP

  • A single ruler who controls a country that the people vote for.
  • Sig-They have control over the military and the police.
  • Example:China, Egypt, Angola

SINGLE PARTY STATE

  • A country that only uses one political party-no others.
  • Sig-You don't get the voice of other parties because they are banned.
  • Example: Cuba, Laos, Vietnam.

PARLIAMENTARY STATE

  • The citizens elect a legislator who than elects the executive branch.
  • sig-You get mutiple elected people to discuss over who is right for the country.
  • Example:United Kingdom, Switzerland

PRESIDENTIAL DEMOCRACY

  • The people get to directly vote for their nations leader.
  • Sig- The citizens get to directly choose who runs their country.
  • Example:USA, France

THOMAS HOBBES

  • An English Philosopher who believed in power to one person.
  • Sig-The United States used some of his thinking when we decided we needed a leader
  • Example:"It is not wisdom but Authority that makes a law." -Thomas Hobbes

  • An English Philosopher who believed that people can rule themselves and are born with rights
  • Sig- The United States took his thinking when we decided that the citizens get to make desicions for the country
  • Example: Voting, Impeachment, etc.

JEAN JACQUE ROUSSEAU

  • Political Philosopher (french) who wrote about power to the people.
  • Sig-The United States used his idea of popular soverneigty.
  • Example: "We the people."

  • A french political philospher who believed in the separation of power
  • Sig-The united states used his thinking to make the legislative, judicial and executive branches
  • Example:"To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them."
