In the year 1935 shanty towns called "Hoovervilles" became an epidemic across America.

HOOVERVILLES

• Homes built out of any raw material available;
• Newspapers, mud, sticks, and tents.
• Were often destroyed by the government, but rebuilt by the homeless.

• Usually small one room shacks filled with 6+ people
• Such small living space caused disease, and sicknesses.

EFFECTS OF HOOVERVILLES

• Residents of these Hoovervilles had little to no food at all.

INTRESTING FACTS

• Residents were unemployed and dirt poor.
• The suicide rate in America went up in the 30's due to lack of employment.
• Many of the poor people lined up at soup kitchens for their next meal.
