PRESENTATION OUTLINE
ABOUT HOTSPOTS...
- Hot spots are places within the mantle where rocks melt to generate magma.
- When a hotspot forms, it stays where it's at
- The plate continues to move over the hotspot
TECTONIC PLATE MOVES OVER A HOTSPOT, FORMING CHAIN OF VOLCANOES.
THREE TYPES OF HOTSPOTS...
- Hawaiian hotspot
- Galapagos hotspot
- Yellowstone hotspot
The Hawaiian hotspot is located in the North Pacific Ocean. Hawaii was made because of this hotspot.
The Galapagos hotspot is located in the East Pacific Ocean. It is on top of the Nazca plate. It created the islands of Galapagos.
Beneath Yellowstone National Park is a volcanic hotspot. The most recent enormous eruption occurred 640,000 years ago.
