WHAT ARE HOTSPOTS?

  • Places where the mantle melts to generate magma.
  • When the hotspot forms, it stays where it is.

EXAMPLES OF HOTSPOTS

  • Hawaii Hotspot
  • Yellostone Hotspot
  • Louisville Seamount Chain

HAWAII HOTSPOT

  • Located near the namesake islands.
  • In the Northern Pacific Ocean.
  • Far from plate boundaries

YELLOWSTONE HOTSPOT

  • Large volcanic hotspot
  • Lies beneath Yellowstone national park
  • It has caused volcanic activity in Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming.
  • The most recent super eruption known as the Lava Creek Eruption took place 640,000 years ago.

LOUISVILLE SEAMOUNT CHAIN

  • This hotspot created underwater mountains.
  • 932 miles in the South Pacific Ocean.
  • These mountains were formed when the pacific plate moved in a northwestern direction.
