Slide Notes

I have lived in three houses. My first house was California. It was a five minute walk to the beach. It was a two story house. The house was made out of cement, like most houses in California. We had a medium sized front yard. We had a big backyard. The backyard was fenced. The second house we lived in was in Quantico, Virginia. The house was made out of cement. The house was small. It was a one story house. We didn't have a backyard. The front yard was very small. The houses were packed together and had very little space between them. The next house we moved to was the house we live in now. It has two stories and a basement. The backyard is large and it is fenced. The front yard is medium sized. The house we live in now is better than the other two houses we lived in.

Housing Areas

"The house...is ours" pg. 3

Many Neighbors

"I'll be your friend... that's when....move away"
I've lived in my neighborhood for a long time. It has been nine years, since we moved to the house. During my time in the neighborhood i have had many neighbors move away. I have experienced really good and nice neighbors. The neighbors that live across from me are really nice. We play basketball together all the time. During the summer we go to their pool and hangout. They also have a lot of dogs. The dogs are all big. They get out of the house a lot. They also shed all over the place. I have also experienced bad neighbors. The neighbors that used to live next to me were nice but they were annoying. They had a cat that would always climb on top of our cars and scratch it. They also had three dogs that would get out of the house and use as our yard as a bathroom. The kids were very annoying. They would knock on our door and ask to play. If we said no they would come back again in twenty minutes and ask again. The kids were also cocky as anything. It is a good thing they moved.

My big Bro

"They've got plenty to say to me inside the house" pg.8
I on and off with my brother. Sometimes we get along. We always play Xbox together. He also drives us to go out and eat. But there is sometimes when we don't get along. When that happens we don't talk to each other. He is five years older than me. He is 21. He goes to the University of Mary Washington. It is his third year there. He lives in the dorm there. So he does not usually come home. He is muscular. He is also tall. He is on the Mary Washington track team. But i know he will always be there for me. He is the only brother i have. We can relate to each other. If i need someone to talk to it'll be him. We will always be brothers and that won't change.

Laughter

"We are more alike than you would know" pg. 17
Most of the people in my family have the same laugh. It's not too loud. it's not too quiet either. We also tend to laugh at the same stuff. Especially me and my mom. We laugh a lot during comedy movies. Its like we are connected by our laughter. We laugh at each other. No one gets mad cause we know we are just playing. My family just plays around with each a lot. Me and my sister are also alike with our laughs. Me and my sister are a lot alike. We have a lot in common. We look alike. Most people think we are twins. So when we laugh its usually together cause we like the same stuff. My dad and I don't really have much in common. We don't really laugh at the same stuff. My brother an I laugh at some of the same stuff. But most of the time we find different things funny. But everyone in my family can relate to things we find funny.

Cousins

"Louie also has another cousin.... We only saw him once" pg. 24
I have a lot of cousins. My dad has nine siblings. All my aunts and uncles on my dads side have kids. I don't really know any of them. I have only met them like one or two times. My mom has sixteen siblings. All of them have kids except for one of my uncles. I'm closer with my cousins on my moms side then my dad. Most of them live in New York. The cousins I know the best are Sean, Connor, and Desiree. Sean is the youngest out of them. He is very wild and likes to complain a lot. Connor is a lot like me. He likes shoes and style. He plays basketball. Desiree is the oldest. She is the same age as me. She is chill and doesn't talk a lot. She is also in love with her phone. Overall I have over one hundred cousins.

Vargas Children

"Vargas' kids are too many and too much" pg.29
My mom's parents were under a lot of stress when they were raising their kids. They had sixteen kids. Sixteen kids is too many for two parents to control. She lived in New York City so they just went all over the place. They lived in the projects. They didn't have a lot of money so live was hard for them. They used to wonder the streets to find change on the ground. That was so they could go an get candy. Sometimes they would save up to buy a pizza for themselves. They were very independent children. They had to take the subway by themselves to get to and from school. My dad also lived in New York City. He lived in the projects too. Him and my mom lived in the same are growing up. But they didn't know each other cause my dad was three years older than her. My dad's parents had nine children all together. My dad was the youngest out of all of them. So most of his stuff was hand me downs. He used to basically do the same stuff as my mom. I guess it was the lifestyle of living in New York City.

Darius

"Darius' who doesn't like school" pg.33
At Massaponax high school you find a lot of kids that are like Darius. Just cause someone gets bad grades in school it doesn't mean they are stupid. Kids could just not try in school cause they are lazy. This happens to me a lot cause I'm lazy and don't like to do homework. But it don't mean I'm dumb. Another reason kids could get bad grades in school is because they just don't like the teacher. Teachers all have their own way of teaching. Some teachers sit up in front of the class and lecture. Which I don't learn that way. Other teachers are good and interact with the class and make it fun. Another reason kid's might get bad grades is because, they are not interested in that particular subject. I know in order for me to get good grades in a class, I have to be interested in the subject. I'm less likely to do good work in a subject i hate. That's why it's important to pick electives that you are interested in. I like the class Sports Marketing. That class is one of my favorites. That's why i have one of my highest grades in that class. Other subjects like math I am not that interested in. Math is my lowest class. When i study I just can't get that into it.

SHoes

"Everyone wants to trade" pg. 40
At Massaponax most of the boys like expensive shoes. Most of them like jordans. People buy jordans from stores. Some people buy them to collect them. I collect them. Some also buy them to sell them for a profit. Which is very smart cause you can make a lot of money of them. Some people buy used shoes from their friend. Others trade shoes. Everyone likes to trade shoes. I don't cause i don't like wearing used shoes. I have ten shoes overall. Seven of them are retro jordans. My favorite are my Gamma elevens. They were $185 in stores. If I wanted to sell them I could sell them for $350. And that is the minimum. They are all black with navy blue bottoms. They have a light blue Jordan sign on the side. They have a gold number 23 on the back of the shoe. In the middle of the shoe on the tongue it has a blue jordan sign and gold words surrounding it.

School Food

The school food is alright. Some things are really good. While others are really bad. I prefer to have school lunch then to pack food from home. They have nasty milk at the school. Sometimes its hot. Room temperature milk is nasty. I have also had expired milk at the school. That's when I first started hating school milk. I usually get water or juice in school lunch. I drink milk at home but definitely not in school. But as far as the food goes it is good. Every day it is something different. The main meal always surprises me. The cheeseburgers and chicken are really good. But they also serve those everyday. So it gets sickening after a while. The fruits are weirdly small. They are always hot. But it sucks that they raised the prices of lunch this year.

Need a Job

"It wasn't as if I didn't want it" pg. 53
I'm 15 and have not had my first job yet. The closest to a job I have had was doing chores. But I want a real job. I want to make money. I like to buy stuff. I need money to do that. I would like to work at a grocery store for my first job. I don't want to work in a fast food place. I don't want to deal with all the greasy foods. At a grocery store I can be a cashier. And if I worked at Bloom it's within a five minute walk from my house. I want a job but also at the same time I don't want one. I'm a lazy person. I think once I get a job I'll want to quit. I'm not a motivated person. Maybe the money will be enough to motivate me. Cause I do really need money. I don't want my parents to pay for everything I get. It makes me feel guilty. I will try to find a job over the summer.

last Name

I feel that last names are not important. It doesn't represent the person. It doesn't tell us anything about them. I only usually ask for a persons first name. For a lot of people I know their first name but not their last name. It's almost as if they don't have last names to me. The only time you want to know someones last name is when you like them. That type of stuff interest you when you like someone. Cause you want to know more about them. But other than that I don't care what their last name is. My last name is Corona. It's the name of a hispanic beer. In spanish it means crown.

Grandparents

"Your abuelito is dead..." pg. 56
Both my grandparents are hispanic. My dad's are Dominican. I never met my dad's father. He died before I was born. But I've seen pictures of him. I met my dad's mom a couple times. My dad looked like his dad more than his mom. We were in the hospital a couple days before she died. She died in New York. I didn't know either of my dad's parents very well. My mom's parents are both puerto rican. I never met my mom's dad either. He died before I was born too. My mom has a couple of pictures of him. She has them in her room. I've met her her mom a lot. I was the closest with her out of all my grandparents. She died in Puerto Rico a couple years ago. My mom was really close with her mom. All my grandparents are dead.

BIg Kid

"only grown-up who likes to play" pg. 67
I have an uncle who acts like a kid. He is a tall muscular guy. He lives in New York. He loves to play sports. He played in the minor leagues for baseball. But he hurt his knee badly. Which forced him to stop playing baseball. It also ended his dreams of making it in the major leagues. Baseball is still his passion. He loves to play baseball with his kids, nieces and nephews. He teaches us a lot about it. Baseball is not the only sport he likes to play. He also likes to play basketball. Sports isn't the only things he likes to do. He loves to eat out. Whenever he visits we always go to a buffet. He is also a fun guy to talk to. He is very funny. He also knows when it's time to get serious.

Homesick

"sings all the homesick songs" pg. 77
My mom and my grandma were both homesick. My mom wants to move to New York. Most of her family is there. So she wants to move to be closer. Family is important to her. She will probably move there when we are in college and on our own. She doesn't want us to move and have to make new friends. I wouldn't mind moving to New York. I would like to be closer to my cousins. My grandma wanted to move back to Puerto Rico. She wanted to move back their before she died. She wanted to be buried there. Before she moved back to Puerto Rico she lived in New York. She was not happy there. It was too crowded for her. She owned a house in Puerto Rico. It had mango trees in the front yard. It had a big fence covering the house. It also had cocunut trees in front of her house. The house was two stories high.

SMart Cookie

"I was a smart cookie then." pg.91
All throughout elementary school and middle school I was always one of the smartest in my classes. I was good at every subject. But my best was always math. It felt like they were always teaching so slow. My learning pace was faster than the rest of the kids. I got a perfect score on my math sol three years in a row. It just came natural to me. Then when I got to middle school I had qualified to be in a math two class. Which meant I skipped 6th and 7th grade math and went to 8th grade math. I was two years ahead. I got good grade in math throughout middle school. I also had A's in my other classes. Then when I came to high school my grades were good for the most part. But towards the end of my freshman year I stopped caring. My grades drop from A's to B's. My math grade was a C. I wasn't used to having to actually study. Before I just knew it all. I didn't have to study. I'm going to have to work a lot harder if I want to get better grades.

Scars

"Thats why... skin is always scarred" pg. 92
As a young kid I was always wild. I did a lot of things that I shouldn't had. I've had so many sports related messages. I play basketball. Basketball is a sport where you get scratched a lot. Even though people say it's a non-contact sport. You still get bruises like any other contact sport. Then there are the injuries that you get in basketball that aren't from contact. You get sprained ankles a lot. I have had a couple of sprained ankles. People also tear their muscles in in basketball. I have never tore anything before. Jammed fingers are probably the most common injury. I have jammed most of my fingers. I have also fractured two of my fingers. But one injury I will never forget happened when I was little. I was playing football on rocks when i fell and slashed my knee open. I have a big scar on my knee now.

"The... moved to Kentucky" pg.94

All though elementary school I had good friend named Jared. We used to hang out a lot. We talked in school almost everyday. We used to play xbox together a lot. Him and I were on the same baseball team. He was really good at baseball. He was the star pitcher of the team. He also loved to play football. But he preferred baseball over football. Then once we entered middle school we faded a little bit as friends. But at the end of the year we started hanging out again. Then he moved to Kentucky. He had to move because his dad got a good job there. Last time I talked to him was 3 years ago. But I heard he quit baseball. He only plays football now.

CLowns

"It wasn't what you said at all." pg. 99
So many people talk about how they are scared of clowns. I have never had a clown at any of my parties. I'm not really scared of them. I don't see why they make them seem scary. They have many scary movies about clowns. When clowns are supposed to make people happy. They are supposed to be the goofy person that makes kids laugh. They have bright colors on. They paint their face in funny designs. They have the red noses that squeak. They always have a trick up their sleeve. Their ultimate goal is to make kids laugh and bring joy to them. I have no problem with clowns. I'm not scared of them. But I also would not get a clown at my party.

Religion

"Then Jesus came..." pg.103
My mom was very religious as a kid. She was Catholic. She went to church every Sunday. My dad is also Catholic. He used to go to church every Sunday also. Then when they got married they continued to go to church. They had us and we were all baptized. We used to go to church weekly. Then as we became toddlers we were really loud. Our parents were embarrassed. So we stopped going to church. We still believe in god. We don't pray before we eat. But that doesn't mean we don't believe in god. When I grow older i plan to go to church. I will have my kids baptized as my parents did.
