The us population is 4.47% and the prison population is 213,708 and counting.

Men make up 90% of prison and local jail population

The men are overwhelmingly young .incarceration rates are higher for those in there 20'sand early30's

Prisoners tend to be less educated , the average state prisoner has a 10th grad education and about 70% have not completed high school

We are the most incarcerated nation in the world not because we have a higher crime rate but because we imprison more types of criminal offenses including non-violent and drug offenders and we keep them longer than other nations
