How I Designed A Fashion Line

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW I DESIGNED A FASHION LINE

BY KATHLEEN MCCARVER

WHY DID I DESIGN MY OWN LINE?

  • I wanted to bring something original to the table. I thought that I had a sense of style that hasn’t been done before.
  • I wanted a chance to make a punk, but comfortably playful line of clothing that I could see myself wearing.

WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?

  • I would do more research before jumping in head first. I quickly learned that my designs were easier to draw than to sew.
  • I would also have a designing team next time. Sometimes, others know better than you do, so it’s important to listen to feedback.

HOW TO GET PEOPLE INVESTED IN YOUR LINE

  • Promote your clothing on social media by wearing it in selfies. If your not wearing your clothing, why should others?
  • Be inclusive. Plus sizes are in. Fatphobia is out!
  • Have an “artistic signature”. What’s the main style/theme that ties your clothes together?

HOW TO GET PEOPLE INVESTED IN YOUR LINE PT 2

  • Don’t be shy. Reach out to influencers that could promote your product.
  • Make a website/Depop for your brand to expand your clientele.
  • Promote said website.
  • Once your brand gets off the ground, word of mouth should do the trick.

HOW TO DESIGN A BASIC OUTFIT.

  • Think of a theme/style that you want to portray and the body type of the model. I tend to think of mine as around a size 12 and a height of 5’4.
  • Draw the figure of your model. Figure drawing is a whole other ball park, but I do have some links I’ll be providing at the end of the presentation. I’ll be happy to answer any questions as well.

  • You chose a T-shirt and pants. Great! Now you just have to draw them on your figure. Oh no! How do you draw those?
  • Watch the following videos, and worry no more.

HOW TO START MAKING MARKETABLE OUTFITS

  • Design pieces with all body types and genders in mind.
  • What makes your piece stand out to consumers?
  • Why would I want to buy your piece instead of someone else’s?
  • Have a healthy mix of wardrobe staples and stand out pieces.
  • Don’t be afraid to get weird. Look at how Dolls Kill turned out!

EXPAND YOUR DEMOGRAPHIC

  • Make your clothing sustainable. The world is melting, due to the greenhouse effect, and in 12 years we may be on the path to extinction. Let’s not do that.
  • Make your clothing accessible. All genders, body types, and ability levels should be accommodated to maximize your clientele. If you have any questions about how to do this, they will be answered.
  • Never copy another artists style. It will bite you later.
  • Make your clothing affordable.
