history behind athens

  • crerops (half man half snake) was the first founder of the city in Greece.
  • the gods of Olympus saw potential, and beauty some even wanted to be an advocate to the city. they also wanted to change the name.
  • if they were to be the patron the city would be named after them therefore when gods started to fight about the city zeus came up with a solution.

zeus's solution

  • Zues decided that each person who would like to be a patron would bring crerops a gift
  • crerops would then decide which gift was the best out of all that were presented to him
  • that would then determine who would be the patron therefore who the city would be named after.

the first god

  • one of the main Greek gods was Poseidon, he struck a rock with his Triton and created a plenitude of water. he promised there would be no drouts the people appreciated it but they moved on to the next god (some myths say it is because the water was from the sea)

the second god

  • another one of the main gods was Athena she stuck a seed in the in the ground and grew an olive tree. the people thought that this would be more helpful by providing a food source. as well as firewood. so they picked Athena she became patron and they named the city Athens in honour of her.
