How To Create A Social Story

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW TO CREATE A SOCIAL STORY

TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH AUTISM

Social stories can…
improve a child’s behavior when there are changes in routines or when they are doing something new for the first time

For example: create a social story:

-before going out to eat for the first time
-before a fire drill
-before a building wide assembly
-before a new student joins your classroom
-before a big move

Notice all the “before” words?? Be proactive with social stories so you don’t have to be reactive as often!

Social stories can…encourage a child to complete a non-preferred task

Incorporate a First-Then schedule right within your social story to reinforce what is happening next for your student

Social stories can…reinforce or teach abstract concepts

Such as…
- time (next, later, in a while)
- the passing of time
- actions
- prepositions

Social stories can…
break down multi-step tasks

So these tasks don’t seem so overwhelming for your student

You can find many pre-made social stories online BUT sometimes making your own allows you to really personalize your story for your student.

You will see a big shift in behavior with the use of social stories!

Good luck with your social stories!!
