HOW TO CROCHET

Introduction
Streetknit is a charity project whose sole purpose is to create knitwear. The knitwear is donated to homeless shelters. If you find knitting to be difficult, then I would suggest you try crochet. Many people find crochet to be easier.

GETTING STARTED

LET'S START CROCHETING!

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook

HOW TO HOLD YOUR HOOK

  • Grab the hook with your thumb and middle finger.
  • Rest your index finger near the the tip of the hook.
  • There you go, this is called the pencil grip.

How to make a Slip knot

  • Fold the yarn to make a loop
  • Catch the yarn through the loop
  • Pull it through
  • Pull the ends to tighten the slip knot

HOW TO MAKE A CHAIN STITCH

  • Hold the crochet hook in your right hand.
  • With your left hand, put the yarn under then over the hook.
  • Slide the yarn under the throat of the hook.
  • Pull the hook with the wrapped yarn through the loop.
  • Be sure to keep up with the amount of chain stitches you have made.

SINGLE CROCHET STITCH

  • Skip the first chain stitch
  • Insert the hook into the second chain stitch
  • Bring yarn over the hook back to front.
  • Pull the hook towards you with the yarn.
  • You will have two loops on your hook.

SINGLE CROCHET STITCH

  • Bring the yarn over back to front again.
  • Pull the yarn through the loops with the hook.

Weave in Ends

  • Cut the yarn leaving a few inches of tail.
  • Insert your tail through the loop on your hook.
  • Remove hook.
  • Pull on tail to tighten.
  • Weave the tail through the stitches with a yarn needle.

Troubleshooting

We all make mistakes sometimes

Warnings

  • Avoid pulling the yarn from the center of the skein.
  • Improve tension by using a ball of yarn.
  • Please put your hair up if it's long to avoid getting it in your project.
  • Remove all cats from the crocheting area.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry a it can get caught on to your project.

Further Warnings

  • Switch hooks when needed.
  • If your work is too tight, use a larger hook.
  • If your work is too loose use, a smaller hook.
  • Don't change hooks in the middle of a project.

Single Crochet Scarf for Beginners

Materials

  • Worseted Weight Yarn
  • Crochet Hook Size I - K
  • Tapestry Needle

Directions

  • Make 15 chain stitches.
  • This will be your first or foundation row.
  • Single crochet in 2nd chain stitch from hook.
  • Single crochet in each of the next 13 chains
  • Chain 1 at the end to turn.

Directions (continued)

  • This will be your second row.
  • Single crochet in each single crochet stitch across.
  • Make one chain stitch at the end of the row.
  • This will be your third row.
  • Continue making rows until you are satisfied.
