How to make Pipe Cleaner Turtles

Abigail John

What is there to know about pipe cleaners?

  • Invented to clean tobacco pipes in 1896 by Fredrick Frick
  • Commonly used for many arts & crafts
  • Typically 6-20 inches in length
  • Craft pipe cleaners are typically made of polyester or nylon & wire

What we will need:

Let's Get Started

Step One

  • Cut the yellow pipe cleaner in half (this step is already done for you)
  • It is easier to use pliers as opposed to scissors

Step Two

  • Cross the yellow pipe cleaners together in the middle
  • This should resemble the shape of an "X"
  • These will be the legs

Step Three

  • Take the end of your light green pipe cleaner and wrap it around the middle of the "X" created by the legs to secure them together

Step Four

  • Take your dark green pipe cleaner & wrap the end of it around one of the legs (closest to the center as possible)

Step Five

  • Start to weave the pipe cleaner around the legs & head in a circular motion going over one under one until the pipe cleaner is fully wrapped

Step Six

  • Once you come to the end you can either secure the extra length of the pipe cleaner underneath the shell or you can trim it with pliers

Step Seven

  • Repeat steps five and six with remaining two dark green pipe cleaners

Step Eight

  • Fold the legs in half and twist to secure at the top near the shell
  • Do this with all four legs, NOT the head
  • These will be the shorter ones, the head will be the one that is longest in length

Step Nine

  • Fold light green pipe cleaner backwards towards shell so that is is longer in length than the legs
  • Wrap the folded back length around the pipe cleaner head, making it a thicker wrap towards the end

Step Ten

  • Place the two black pins in the head for the eyes & bend the legs slightly outwards
  • You now have a cute little pipe cleaner turtle!
