How to Start Third Graders Reading!

A Performance Based Assessment by Kinshasha Jones 

Goal:
Students will provide a detailed summary from a story

S.C. State Standards

  • Recognize cause and effect relationships
  • Summarize stories and paraphrase inforamtion found in texts
  • Compare and contrast settings, characters, events and ideas.
  • Organize inforamtion or events logically
  • Write about what is read

What are we reading?

Students will read the story, How Not to Start Third Grade by Cathy Hapka and Ellen Titlebaum.

Reading the story

  • The main character Will, is starting third grade
  • His younger brother, Steve is starting Kindergarten
  • Will is dreading the first day of school
  • He makes mental notes called "lessons" throughout the story
  • Will learns a total of 6 "lessons"

Will's Back to School Lessons!

  • Your momwill never see your little brother for the monster he is
  • Never let anyone see you in the hall with your little brother.
  • When starting school with your little brother, don't sit near the window!
  • Always make sure you pick up your own lunch!
  • Mom was right - dogs and school don't mix!

6. Never think that starting school with your little brother could be anything but a total and complete disaster!

Students will receive a worksheet with Will's six lessons but they will be out of order. Their first task will be to put the lessons in the order they appear in the story.

Now, the students will write the event or events that lead to Will's "lesson".

Now let's use our imaginations!

Students will draw conclusions based on the story...

Students will pretend that they are Steve, Will's little brother.
They will write 4 "lessons" based on things that Steve did in the story.

The assessement allows students to:

  • Be creative
  • Look for evidence
  • Put events in order
  • Analyze details
  • Perform multiple tasks while reading
