“And / But” Conjunctions?
What are “And / But” Conjunctions?
They are coordinating conjunctions!
Coordinating conjunctions are words...
...placed between other words, sentences...
...phrases and clauses of equal importance.
They are also known
as coordinators.
They are used to give equal emphasis to a pair of main clauses.
A clause is a statement that is either true or false.
This is also known
as a proposition.
There are just seven coordinating conjunctions in English.
They are “for, and, nor,
but, or, yet, so”.
Here are a few examples with “And and But”
to study.
“And” No Contrast
or Equal.
“I like ice cream and
I like cake too!”
“You enjoy the beach
and so do I!”
“We always go to the park and zoo on Sundays!”
“They are often
home relaxing and
watching movies!”
“He doesn’t like
pizza and sushi!”
“She doesn’t enjoy the cinema and dinner out!”
“My cat never sleeps at night and relaxes!”
“Do you enjoy the
beach and river?”
“Does he ever stay at home and relax?”
“Does she often go to the cinema and eat popcorn?”
“But” Contrast or Exception.
“I smoke cigars, but
I don’t drink beer!”
“You like the opera
but you dislike the
uncomfortable seating!”
“We enjoy watching movies but it
is so expensive!”
“They were home but
they were sleeping!”
“He travels a lot but doesn’t have a car!”
“She sings at the club
but doesn’t dance!”
“It stays awake all night but doesn’t bother anyone!”
