  • Are written in the style of a comic book
  • May have a unique style of illustrating
  • Motivate kids to read
  • Can be a way to reach students through a non traditional text
  • May contain advanced vocabulary and a range of literary devices

I found them to be a creative way to synthesize information, whether you are responding to literature or analyzing history!

NOW WHAT?

  • Decide in which content area you would like your students to create a graphic novel.
  • If you decide to do a graphic novel in social studies, analyze one of the mentor texts in this genre.
  • Tip: Check out the Graphic Library series which contain biographies, history, and science!
  • If you decide to do literature, pick up a Wimpy Kid book or a Rick Riordan graphic novel.
  • Model, model, model with your students. What do you notice?
