HPV

HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

MELANESIA

  • East of Australia, it is combined of 5 islands: Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia.
  • New Caledonia is less dense of the 5.
  • Having the least amount of people on the New Caledonia would be a great opportunity for diseases like the HPV infection to take its course and spread through the island more effectively.

POPULATION DENSITY

  • The main cause of diseases spreading more quickly amongst people is because they are living in close vicinity to each other
  • With more recurring contact between individuals it allows the disease to transfer more easily in a more confined population
  • An outbreak in one region that could have been contained could move into other uncontaminated regions

CULTURE

  • Even though it’s not predominantly practiced today, a tradition that use to be held in Melanesia would be to greet each other by rubbing each other's groin region.

OVERCROWDING

  • The population in Melanesia has grown tremendously over the last 64 years, going from 2,646,016 in 1955 to 10,976,242 in 2019.
  • While most of the countries in Melanesia have decent public and private healthcare facilities, many decide to use smaller, private hospitals in the bigger cities
  • This could be a major problem when it comes to the spreading of HPV. Having smaller private healthcare facilities could cause a larger outbreak. Most small hospitals would be limited when it comes to helping prevent diseases

ECONOMIC STABILITY

  • HPV infection is a viral infection .There are more than 100 varieties HPV
  • As with any vaccine there is a cost. In Melanesia there are an estimated 4,696 cases of cervical cancer associated with HPV annually with a total cost of nearly 39.2 million dollars.
