The mystery of the church

The Family of God

  • The Church is known as "the household of God," and we are all in the family of God. We enter this family through Baptism. All the members of the Church share life through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
  • Clergy - Members of the church who receive the sacrament of holy orders.
  • Laity - Baptized members of the Church.
  • Religious - A member of a religious community.
  • 1Corinthians 12:18-26

Essential Features

  • All of us have aset of unique characteristics that set us apart. The Church also has unique characteristics, four essential ones.
  • Unity: A Gift Never to Be Lost- The unity of the Church. God the Father calls us to be one into the Body of Christ, and the Holy Spirit gives life to this body. The unity of the Church is expressed through the Sacraments. We are united as one in Baptism and gather to the Table of the Lord. Through Holy Orders the Church can trace its unity back to the time of the apostles. We are one in the Lord.
  • A Work of Grace- The Church is considered holy because we are sanctified through our union with Christ. We participate in god's holiness through the Church. The Holy Spirit guides the Church at all times. Through Christ we are being built together a dwelling place through God. We are the bearers of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
  • At Home Around the World-
  • Catholic-Universal or missionary.
  • The Church can never associate itself with one place or time. The Church is called catholic because it focuses precisely on Missionary work alone. The Church must never rest from bringing Christ into the world.
  • The True Foundation- The Church is apostolic because it was founded on Christ and the apostles. The Apostles were chosen by Christ himself. The Apostles-guided by the Holy Spirit- handed the teachings of Christ. The apostolic foundation can never be replaced. The Church must always strive to stay in tune with its apostolic foundation.
