Africa part 1
-afflicted by dislocation with more than 8 million refugees
-most refugees are in Subsaharan africa
-in the first years of the 21st century several of the largest refugee crises happened in Subsaharan Africa
-Sudan has been in a civil war between the north and the south for 2 years

-the conflict worsened because of the decision of the Muslim dominated regime to enforce Islam's Sharia religious laws which are harsh(will cut limbs off for theft)
-over 2.2 million people have died fighting or starved as a result of the war
5 million people have been displaced and 1.6 million of those in the neighboring country Uganda

Africa part 2 and North Africa
- Entire north of Sudan is Muslim but onl 2/3 speak Arabic
- Janjaweed (the militia) has a genocide campaign against the non-Arab
- The genocide includes killing, raping and taking away land
- Genocide: acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group
- The Muslim conflict in Darfur shows that not all political conflict is religious, it's also etnic and political

- Regional scale: African Union ( organization to find African solutions to African problems) has sent troops to Darfur to help sove the crisis
- Global scale: The United Nations Security Council threatened damages against the gov. For their actions in Darfur

- World's longest-lasting refugee problems in Morocco and Afghanistan

North Africa and Southwest Asia:
-In 1991, 2.5 million people from the Kurdish population in the northern part of Iraq escaped to and across Turkish and Iranian borders. This was due to the aftermath of the Gulf war and the invasion of Iraq.
-The current Iraq war has has generated a total of 2 million refugees in neighboring countries Jordan and Syria

-When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 it lead to millions of Afghans moving into Iran and Pakistan. Adding up to an estimated 2.5 million refugees living in Iran, and some 3.7 million in Pakistan.
-In 1996, the Taliban started in Pakistan, and emerged in Afghanistan eventually taking control of the whole country. The refugees that moved back to Afghanistan from Pakistan moved to Iran creating countermigration. The number of Afghans in Iran reached 2.5 million.
-Most refugees don’t go back to their home country.
-Almost all countries in Southwest Asia are experiencing the impact of refugees.
