The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU brings together in a single document the fundamental rights protected in the EU. The Charter contains rights and freedoms under six titles: Dignity, Freedoms, Equality, Solidarity, Citizens' Rights, and Justice.

Proclaimed in 2000
legally binding on the EU w/ Treaty of Lisbon, Dec 2009

Article 4: No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

The European Commission calls human trafficking:
"A modern form of slavery"

And yet"...human trafficking and prostitution exists in all 28 EU member states"

Conclusion:
Although, many see the European Union as the best advocate for human rights, there are still serious violations within it's borders.
Furthermore, the legitimacy of it's institutions will be questioned if influential, founding nations withdraw their support
