HUNDRED YEARS WAR

BACKGROUND

  • The Hundred Years' War was a series of wars between England and France for the crown of France
  • It lasted from 1337 to 1453
  • In 1328, Charles IV of France died without having any children
  • That meant that the Carpetian Dynasty would die out
  • Heirs to Charles IV's throne: Isabelle and her son Edward King Of England

BACKGROUND CONT.

  • The Nobles passed the French Crown to Phillip VI(English)
  • Phillip VI gave the Duchy of Aquitaine to the French, which started the conflict between England and France
  • Poor knights and unemployed knights were promised regular wages but got much more less
  • In 1337, the French made sea raids on English coastal towns
  • The French fleet was almost completely destroyed when it attempted to land soilders on English soil

THE BATTLE OF POITIERS

  • Second major engagement of the hundred years wear
  • Edward the Black Prince raids France in 1356
  • Outside of Poitiers, the forces met and the French attacked
  • King of France (Jean II)was captured along with 2,000 of the French aristocracy
  • Aristocracy- a government or state ruled by an elite upper class

BATTLE OF LA ROCHELLE

  • June 22-23,1372
  • Fierce naval battle
  • The French reign control of the English Channel
  • This made it difficult for England to ferry reinforcements
  • The combined Spanish and French forces defeated the English- gained dominance over the English Channel

SIEGE OF ORLEANS

  • The siege of Orleans was the turning point of the Hundred Years' War
  • After 80years of warfare, the French finally gained the power with the decisive victory at Orleans
  • Around this time, Joan of Arc appears at the court of Charles
  • In May, Joan attacks the English in unison with a force from Orleans
  • Military advantage now lies with the French

  • September 3, 1783- Treaty Of Paris Signed to end the Revolutionary War
  • September 3, 1954- Pope Pius X canonized as a saint
  • September 3, 1944- Anne Frank goes to Aushwitz

FEBRUARY 19 (MARY)

  • 1350 Philip VI dies- Philip VI dies and is succeeded by his son John II
  • 1945 World War II US Marines Land on Iwo Jima- United States, Marines landed on the tiny island of two Jima where they were met with heavy resistance from the Japenese
  • In 607 Boniface III begins his reign as Catholic Pope

OUTCOME OF THE WAR

  • The English lost all their holdings in France except for Calias
  • Henry VI made peace with France which ended the war
  • The French won the Hundred Years' War
  • In 1558, the French took Calias
