Geography

  • Hungary is a relatively small country in Central Europe. 
  • Hungary is highly developed. 
  • Hungary is participating in the globalization process.
  • A common map scale for Hungary is 1:400,000

Population and migration

  • The population of Hungary is 9,939,470.  
  • Hungary's NIR is -0.4%.
  • Hungary is stage 4 of DTM, possibly moving into stage 5.
  • The Treaty of Trianon after WWI began a period of migration.
  • Many ethnic Hungarians, or Magyars, were displaced and migrated.

Language

  • A magyar nyelv az úgynevezett magyar=
  • The Hungarian language is known as Magyar.
  • Ez egyike azon kevés uráli nyelvek a világon=
  • It is one of few Uralic languages in the world, 
  • let alone the region. 

Culture

  • Much of Hungary's population follows popular culture.
  • One folk tradition of Hungary is the painting of Easter eggs.
  • Busojaras, seen in the picture, is a festival to keep winter away.
  • Kremes are a traditional Hungarian dessert.

  • Hungary is a nation-state, with 90% of the population Magyar
  • Religious freedom is guaranteed
  • Over half of people are Catholic
  • 20% are Calvinist
  • Most others belong to various Christian faiths or are nonreligious

Political geography

  • Hungary is a compact, landlocked state. 
  • It is a sovereign state with borders marked by boundaries.
  • These boundaries include geometric and physical boundaries.
  • There are also some cultural boundaries.
  • Hungary is part of the United Nations.

Agriculture

  • Agriculture forms about 16% of Hungary's economic output.
  • Horticulture and beef are major exported agricultural products.

Industry

  • Hungary is a rising industrial center in Central Europe
  • 21% of Hungary's exports are automotive
  • Other major industries include electronics and information technology

  • Hungary is highly developed economically.
  • The service sector accounts for about 2/3 of the economy.
  • This is the tertiary sector of the economy.

  • Budapest is by far the largest city.

Hungary's Prime Minister

  • Viktor Orban is Hungary's current prime minister.
  • He was recently reelected on April 6.
  • His plans seem similar to Putin's in Russia.
  • He is eliminating and weakening the balance of 
  • government to give himself more power.

  • Hungary is considerably underdeveloped.

  • Guinea-Bissau's population is 1,660,870
  • There is an NIR of 2.5
  • Infant Mortality Rate of 96 deaths per 1,000 births
  • 42% of the population is under 15.

Migration

  • Many Guinea-Bissauans migrate for economic opportunities
  • Top destinations include France and Cote d'Ivoire.        

CUlture

  • Guinea-Bissau is very diverse culturally.
  • There is no real dominant group, rather hundreds of small ones
  • Dominated by folk cultures, little popular cultures.

Language & Religion

  • Portuguese is lingua franca, but only 11% of people know it
  • Most follow traditional animistic religions. 
  • The most commonly spoken language is a Portuguese creole
  • This is pular, an ethnic language.

  • It has a fair amount of coastline for its size.
  • Most boundaries are geometric
  • The boundaries are a result of colonial times, so they are superimposed

  • Many Guinea-Bissauans live by subsistence agriculture
  • Cashews are Guinea-Bissau's major export crop
  • There is little industry in Guinea-Bissau

  • Guinea-Bissau's largest city is Bissau.
