LOSING ALL

SAM
HD Created By Tiffany Chu

The protagonist of the story is Sam Temple, a fifteen-year old boy living in Perdido Beach, only wanting to surf. But all that changed when the FAYZ, or Fallout Alley Youth Zone, came down. Interpreting dreams and nightmares, Sam leads the rest in the FAYZ, towards a common goal: escape. But this is temporarily set on hold as other conflicts arise.

AN UNWANTED ROLE

TOUGH, CONSEQUENTIAL DECISIONS
"Not for the first time, or even the hundredth time, Sam wished he had never, ever agreed to become anybody's leader" (Grant 145-146).

Even though Sam agreed to become the mayor in the FAYZ, or Fallout Alley Youth Zone, he regrets the decision for every second of his life. Being the mayor, Sam is forced to make tough decisions and endure the consequences, which always come back to haunt him.

INSTABILITY

HARSH TEMPER
" 'Because I can't, that's why...' The resentment he'd held in now came boiling to the surface. 'It's my job to pick the fruit, and collect the trash, and ration the food, and catch Hunter, and stop Caine, and settle every stupid little fight, and make sure kids get a visit from the Tooth Fairy. What's your job, Zil? Oh, right: You spray hate graffiti. Thanks for taking care of that, I don't know how we'd ever manage without you' " (Grant 379).

Sam has a harsh temper. Because of this, his relationships are affected poorly with many; for example, only "freaks" are willing to side with him in battles. He has no tolerance for those who make life even worse than it already is. "Normals" sit around and/or make life more complicated, as "freaks" gather food from the fields, on top of constantly being on guard and prepared for any battles that may come their way.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

IGNORES ACCOMPLISHMENTS
"He imagined himself facing a tribunal. Stone faces glaring at him. Accusations. You let them starve, Sam. You let normals turn against freaks. Tell us about the death of E.Z., Mr. Temple. Tell us what you did to save the kids at the power plant. Tell us how you failed to find a way out of the FAYZ. Tell us why, when the FAYZ wall came down, we found found dead kids in the dark. They were down to rating rats, Mr. Temple. We have evidence of cannibalism. Explain that to us, Mr. Temple" (Grant 423).

Sam is hard on himself; instead of remembering all of his accomplishments, he sees his failures. This drive reinforces why Sam is fit to be the mayor. But there are also many downfalls, one of which includes is the fact that sometimes he takes it too far. Pushing others beyond their limits, to strive to be the best, has led to various conflicts, like the growing rivalry between "normals" and "freaks".

RELIABILITY

HERO
"Back when he was Sam Temple, some kid, some random kid who just wanted to surf. No. That wasn't true either. He'd already stopped being just some random kid. So, by the time Sam, in a panic, had created the light that would not die, he had already been School Bus Sam, and the person who'd burned a grown man's hand off..." (Grant 420-421).

Before the FAYZ even came down around Perdido Beach, Sam had already started his journey to being a hero. Rescuing a bus full of kids, as the bus driver had a heart attack, was the first of many things that were to be uncovered. Sam's journey is continued by the series of battles that follow.

NEVER-ENDING REGRET

CRUCIAL DECISIONS
"There was a list in his head, a list that kept scrolling and scrolling. Words and phrases. One after another. Each representing a thing he should be doing... Things to do. Decisions to make" (Grant 422).

Even as young as he is, Sam is responsible. Despite being the mayor, no one forced Sam to take charge and begin organizing and planning for any possible future attacks from Caine and Drake. Both while wide awake and during the few hours of shut-eye, Sam is always thinking about the conflicts that need to be resolved and the crucial decisions that need to be made. All of that falls solely on the shoulders of Sam, only furthering his worries.

WHITE FLAG

COMPASSION & LOVE
" 'This button right here? It drops the control rods back in. And everyone lives. If no one hits the button... well. According to Jack, we'll die pretty quick. Everyone else in the FAZY dies slow... 'Drake...' Sam raised his hands, palms facing Drake... 'If I drop it...' Drake warned. Slowly Sam lowered his arms to his side... How long before it was too late? One more failure, Sam thought dully" (Grant 489/490).

The compassionate side of Sam is revealed when lives are put at risk. Even though the "normals" hurt those he loved, Sam was still willing to surrender to Drake to save them; despite losing a close friend because of the normals, Sam endured the agonizing beating from Drake to save the many other lives - the babies, toddlers, adolescents, and fellow teenagers.
