HUNTING DOGS

History

The history of hunting dogs dates back to as far as 500 B.C

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

  • The first "dog" to be used as hunting was known as the modern day wolf
  • Cavemen began the process by following herds of wolves
  • The hunt wasn't started by humans , but the animal
  • Since wolves have a herding instinct , the prey is first surrounded
  • Then , with what ever tools/ bones the cavemen had , the prey was captured

MODERN DAY HUNTING DOGS

  • Modern day hunting dogs are breeds such as :
  • Labrador Retrievers
  • Pointers
  • And various hounds
  • Mixed breeds can also be trained

TRAINING

  • Puppy training should start between 6 - 8 weeks old
  • The reason for starting young is because of development in :
  • The brain ( for mental storage and preparation)
  • The body ( muscle memory and strength )
  • Senses ( develop sight & specific smell traits )

THE POINTER

  • Pointers vary in height depending on the specific breed
  • Have a very keen sense of smell
  • Various traits of this breed include :
  • Twitch muscles
  • A stub tail

POINTER BREED

  • Pointers are 55 - 75 lbs on average
  • Females are generally smaller
  • Colors : red, brown, faun, black, speckled, mixed, gray
  • Most common : speckled w/ patches of different colors
  • Narrow body frame & lighter bones

LABRADOR RETRIEVER

  • Labs have a solid body frame
  • Are solid and look thicker
  • Muscles develop stacked for more bulk
  • Have webbed paws for swimming
  • Hind legs contain more muscle

LAB FACTS

  • Weight : 60 - 90 lbs
  • Colors : black , yellow, brown
  • Coat type : short, wavy at hind quarters
  • Health issues : hip dysphasia , allergies, water rot
  • Some labs begin to have problems with paws depending on activity
