Known as High Blood Pressure
Makes your heart work harder to pump blood to the body
Is Non-Communicable Disease
Smoking and dumping salt on everything you eat can cause High blood pressure
You can go years without symptoms but still have high blood pressure

CAUSES
Smoking and being of an older age
Being overweight/obese
Lack of physical activity
Stress and gentics
Lots of salt in your diet and lots of alcohol consumption

1 in 3 American adults has High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure causes the government $47.5 billion a year
47% of people that nave High Blood Pressure have their condition under control
More men tend to get it then women.
If your 65-75 years old women tend to get it more rather than men

RISK FACTORS
Age......as you get older you become more likely to get it
Family history has a factor
Your race.......blacks to tend to have more serious complications than whites
If you have other chronic diseases like sleep apnea and kidney disease it becomes more likely
If you dont have enough potassium or vitamin D in your diet

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Can go a long time without knowing you have HIgh Blood Pressure
Can lead to a weaker heart casuing Heart failure
Blood spots in the eyes, and in severe cases you can feel bad headaches, anxiety, nosebleeds, and shortness of breath
Dizziness
Can cause blood vessels in eyes to burst or bleed leading to vision changes and blindness

SCREENING/EARLY DETECTION/DIAGNOSIS
Starting at the age of 20 you should get it checked once evey 2 years
High blood pressure greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Stage 1 hypertension 140 to 159. Normal is anywhere ranging from 120/80 and below
Stage 2 hypertension is more severe and occurs at 160 mm Hg or higher
Prehypertension ranges from 120 to 139 mm Hg

Includes maintaining healthy weight, diet changes, and being physically active
Quitting smoking if you happen to smoke
Water pills flush out excess water and salt from your body reducing your blood pressure
Other medicines widen blood vessels, remove excess salt and fluids, and some slow your heartbeat down

Maintain a healthy weight
