HYPHEN

WHAT IS A HYPHEN?

  • A punctuation mark (-)
  • It is used between the parts of a compound word
  • It is used between the syllables of a word
  • When a word is divided at the end of a line of text (sentence)
  • A hyphen is used in a compound adjective before a noun

THE RULES OF HYPHEN

  • The best place to check if a compound word is hyphenated, is in the dictionary.
  • A hyphen is used in compound adjectives before a noun or as a line text break.
  • You do not hyphen a compound verb after a noun.
  • Hyphens are used w/ the prefixes ex (former) , and with figures or letters.
  • It is also used with self- ; all-; -elect; between a prefix and a capitalized word.

FUN WITH HYPHEN

  • Hyphens are used to join two or more words to serve as a single adjective before a noun
  • Self-reliant person, able-bodied athlete
  • Using hyphens with prefixes, suffix, letters, etc.
  • All-knowing, mid-September, mid-1990's, T-shirt, mayor-elect
  • Line breaks ending in -ing should break at the "ing" ( driv-ing)

CORRECT AND INCORRECT USE OF HYPHENS

  • She has a anti-crime project in the making.
  • He is a well-respected man.
  • She has-an attitude problem.
  • Do-not cry so- much.
  • Never put the first or last letter of a word @ the end or beginning of a sentence, always hyphenate correctly.
