Native Americans

  • In 1492, when Columbus came to America, there were an estimated 15,000 Indians in South Carolina. by 1775, there were only 7,500, due to disease and warfare.
  • Corn or maize was the most important food source.
  • Combat only took place in the Spring, Summer and Fall. Periods of peace were sometimes broken by raids from other tribes.
  • There were fifty or more language groups in North America when Columbus landed. South Carolina had four language groups: Muskogean, Iroquoian, Siouan, and Algonquian.

Africans

  • They spoke the Gullah language which is a combination of English and African dialects.
  • The English took the Africans as slaves across the middle passage.
  • The Africans were very important to the Europeans because they already knew how to cultivate rice.

Africans (continued)

  • The Stono Rebellion, a slave revolt near Charlestown, significantly increased the concern of slaves outnumbering whites by 2 to 1.
  • The Negro Act of 1740 prohibited slaves from gathering without white supervision, learning to read and write, and carrying guns.
  • Much of the Negro Act was devoted to controlling minute aspects of the slaves life. For example, they were not allowed to dress in a way above the clothing of a slave.

Economy

  • Rice was named Carolina Gold because of how much money it made.
  • Eliza Lucas Pickney farmed indigo because of the money it would make as a dye.
  • Mercantilism was an economic system in which the mother country exported more than it imported.

Government

  • South Carolina started as a proprietary colony when the land and political control was granted to the eight lord proprietors.
  • In Carolina there was a Carolina legislative assembly that made laws including taxes laws for the colony.
  • The king reached a financial agreement with the proprietors and Carolina became a royal colony and was later split into North and South Carolina.
