James 1:1
“James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.”
James 1:1 ESV
THE BOTTOM LINE: A DEVOTED FOLLOWER OF GOD BECOMES A SERVANT.
3 important details about servants during this time period:
1). A servant was dedicated to one master--could not serve two masters, you could only serve one
2). A servant had no rights (was considered the property of the master)--(the servant was bound to the will of its master, the master controlled what the servant could and could not do.)
3). A servant did what the master told him to do (whatever the master told the servant to do, the servant had to obey).
These three details give us a clear definition of what James means by the word servant:
A servant is a person who lives in complete and total devotion to God, His will, and His word.
Absolute #1 A servant shows absolute loyalty to God-a servant is dedicated to one master.
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.”
Matthew 10:24 ESV
Absolute #2 A servant shows absolute humility.---a servant has no rights
“And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
Mark 9:35 ESV
Absolute #3 A servant demonstrates absolute obedience.--a servant did what the master told him to do.
“If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.”
John 12:26 ESV
THE BOTTOM LINE: A DEVOTED FOLLOWER OF GOD BECOMES A SERVANT.
Why is becoming a servant important?
Because a follower who becomes a servant is a person who is no longer selfish but selfless and becoming selfless is the mark of spiritual maturity and a sign of being a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for all you have done in my life. Thank you for always being there for me even when I was not truly serving you the way I should. I pray that you forgive me today and help me to become the servant you want me to be.
Lord, I desire to be a loyal servant. One who stays faithful no matter what may come my way. Lord, I desire to be humble, so I humble myself before You, understanding that You are in control of my life and my purpose on this earth is to serve You and others.
Lord, help me to be an obedient servant that will do everything you ask of me. Holy Spirit, help me in all these things to be the servant God wants me to be. In Jesus Name, I pray, Amen!
