ICELANDS HISTORY

  • Iceland was settled in the 9th and 10th centuries
  • In 1492 the Black Plague infected Iceland
  • A third of the population dies
  • 1387 the Kalmer act of union unifies Norway Iceland and Denmark
  • 1707 the bubonic plague infects iceland and again a third of the country dies

ICELAND'S HISTORY 2

  • Before the bubonic plague the population was 50,385
  • 1783-1786 volcanic activity destroys farmland and the people starve
  • 1925 women can vote
  • 1926 the population hits 100,000
  • 1940 Iceland is occupied by British troops and in 1941 US troops are there as well they left in2006

HISTORY PART 3

  • 1944 The republic of Iceland is established
  • In 1958 Iceland has a dispute with Britain it was known as a cod war
  • 1970 two more cod wars with Britain and west Germany
  • 2008 economic crisis almost destroys their banking system
  • 2009 Iceland's first female prime minister is Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir

Government
Iceland is a constitutional republic with a multi- party system. It has a head of state which is the president. It has the oldest parliament, it started in 930.

Every 4 years the electorate chooses 63 representatives to be in the Althingi. Anyone who can vote can stand for parliament. Following each election the president allows that leader of a political party to form a cabinet. A cabinet of ministers stay until the next election and can vote in parliament.
