IDEA 1997

  • Protects students with disabilities and allows an IEP in class to ensure proper instruction
  • This is important because teachers can face charges if they do not abide by this law that protects disabilities.

Title IX and Sex Discrimination

  • August 1998
  • Protects students from discrimination based on sex
  • This is important because teachers need to notice when this could be happening to their students or their own job
  • "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Jacob Javits G & T 1988

  • Created to support the development of talent in schools
  • Next step is to have guidelines for funding
  • This is important for teachers to know who needs this program to live out their full potential in school and be challenged

Title I 1965

  • This act was for improving academic disadvantaged students
  • Close the gap between high and low achieving students
  • meeting educational needs of low achieving students

Section 504 1973 & 1974

  • Protects students in the classroom with impairments and have accommodations in the classroom
  • must have an impairment that prevents them from doing daily tasks effectively
  • not abiding by a 504 can lead to charges, misconduct, and termination

Lau v. Nichols 1974

  • Protects students that are not English speaking
  • Protects them from "sink or swim" instructions from teachers
  • Teachers must accommodate to ELL students in their classroom
